MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee State University’s flagship station True Blue TV welcomes its newest team member on the August episode of “Out of the Blue,” the university’s television magazine program.

Karli Sutton, multimedia specialist and MTSU alumna, discusses her new position as a multimedia reporter for both True Blue TV and MTSU News and Media Relations. Alongside weekly video news stories for News and Media Relations, Sutton will also be providing longer form video content for “Out of the Blue” starting in September.

“MTSU offers so many amazing programs, clubs, opportunities, and I think that with my work, I want to be able to kind of highlight and broadcast those things for students, current students or prospective students that would want to come to the campus and just show how truly awesome MTSU actually is,” Sutton shared during her interview with program host Andrew Oppmann, vice president of the Division of Marketing and Communications.

The School of Journalism and Strategic Media provided Sutton with years of experiential learning opportunities through organizations like Middle Tennessee News, a student-run media learning laboratory where she learned the ins and outs of broadcast journalism.
“I, as a student, had the opportunity to work as a reporter… I got to use the video cameras and the writing software that industry professionals get to use,” Sutton said, “It’s a little intimidating at first, but after having done it for just a single semester, I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my time at MTSU being involved in the news program that we had.”

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2022, Sutton is on track to finishing her master’s degree in media and communications by December and credits her growth and opportunities to those who helped her along the way at MTSU.
“I realized that I truly had a solid community and solid team behind me,” Sutton said. “They didn’t want me to fail, they wanted me to succeed in any way possible. We took any opportunity that we had to learn.”
